DRAFT ZOOM MEETING PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD June 10, 2021 Present: Jeffrey Fracher, Ned Michie, Hosea Mitchell, and Jennifer Slack. Absent: Anne Hemenway, Lashundra Bryson-Morsberger, Bridget Moss and Shawn Strubbe Staff: Todd Brown, Vic Garber, Chris Gensic and Algreatus Batton Guest: Sterling Howell, Tom Chapman, ONCDC Teachers, Molly Conger, Public Comment Adoption of Minutes  No quorum to adopt minutes Updates on Parks & Recreation  Vic Garber gave a report update on facilities & programs:  Carver, Key & Tonsler Centers are open with modified hours  Crow – pool is open, center is closed  Housing sites - serving meals  Onesty – closed for summer  Department has enough guards to operate Washington & Crow Pools, need 17 to open Smith Aquatic center which will open 8/1  Washington Park Pool – starting Saturday will open 7 days a week, capacity 225, will slowly increase to 250, brief lines the past weekend, goal to get to 300 capacity  Spray grounds – Tonsler, Belmont & Greenleaf open 7 days, Forest Hills – difficulty w/contractors – approximately to open late next week  Park restrooms – slowly opening as more staff are hired  Athletics – softball & volleyball doing well, men’s basketball – 12 teams playing @ Key Center  Enrichment programs - - begins 6/14  Group exercise – slowly picking up  Day Camps – start 6/21, fully staffed, camp staff training begins 6/14  Greenleaf & Jackson Via camps are almost full, Walker & Tonsler camps still taking participants  Adaptive – doing well, hybrid program, most virtual, great job during COVID  Swim team – 144 Swimmers,  Aquatic group exercise – 76 participants , slowly progressing Tonsler Master Plan  Tonsler Master Plan – will review public comments from 2013, comments from other neighborhood meetings  Put together an RFP for design & construction, then will go back to community to update  Jeffrey Fracher asked if basketball possible priority for field house Naming of Parks Update  Chris Gensic took board suggested park names to City Manager, current policy does not have City Council for naming, but they did name city parks, City Council wants to add their names to naming policy  8th Street Park – bring to City Council in September with other names  Amend policy – to add City Council  Will put together a report  New park on 8th Street – sent photos, ribbon cutting will be mid-July discussion, July Advisory Board – have ribbon cutting on normal July meeting date  Ned Michie asked about field trip to parks of interest, board members okay with no July meeting CIP Update & Discussion  Ned Michie starting to draft a spreadsheet on keeping track of CIP projects, come up with priorities Future Meeting Agenda Items  Ned Michie asked board members to send ideas Chairman’s Matters  Bylaws – started a working document on bylaws, address increasing members, meeting dates, term limits, etc. Directors Matters  Todd Brown talked about problem with Ash trees, USDA providing wasps @ Ragged Mt, 5 year study, free of charge  Announced that Sara Blech & Adaptive team have been nominated for Disability Impact award – will find out if they won by end of June  Daily Progress – golf course finalist, City Market – won  Aquatics staff – impressive getting facilities & programs open Motion to Adjourn  Ned Michie adjourned meeting @ 6:40 pm Respectfully submitted, Linda Daly Secretary to the Advisory Board “Individuals with disabilities who require assistance or special arrangements to participate in the public meeting may call the ADA Coordinator at (434) 970- 3182 or submit a request via email to ada@charlottesville.gov.
