Draft ZOOM MEETING PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD May 19, 2022 Present: Jeffrey Fracher, Ned Michie, Shawn Strubbe, Hosea Mitchell, and Anne Hemenway Absent: Lashunrda Morsberger Staff: Riaan Anthony, Vic Garber, and Chris Gensic Public Matters No public matters Administration Matters Adoption of Minutes • All in favor to approve the minutes • Minutes approved Staff Update- Riaan Anthony • New Urban Forester- Steve Gains • Landscape Supervisor- Ronnie Duty • Pest Management Manager- Libby • Playground Technician- Two Bears New Staff Introductions • Ali Thomas- Operations Specialist 2, Program assistant • Michelle Bush- Program Supervisor • Michael Johnson- Aquatics Facility Manager • Chris Carr- Facilities and Program Manager **Promotion** Student Report- Elizabeth Harrington • Slideshow sent to council Smith AFC update • Minor items in the Virginia A&E report. Will not hold up opening • Stay tuned for opening date Benjamin Tonsler Park Update • Members want their green space • Planning on eliminating the circle and extending that to the building. Will add 14- 15 parking spots. • Small area plan 2021 responses: More bleachers and shelter space. • Community will wait for the master plan before the field house. • Reconfiguring existing recreation center • Creating a priority list before moving forward • Looking to start the process in 12 months Questions: • Are they still looking at Tonsler for a polling place? Anne: “looking at Jackson Via as an alternative.” • What’s happening at Penn Park? Riaan: “Established a great relationship with Bennet’s Village, meet once a month no matter what to keep communication open.” • Greenbriar boardwalk repair- Riaan: We have the money for it and the contactor for it. Waiting for the contractor to be available. Will cut it up in sections and will install it in sections. • Looking at all projects that have grants and figure out how to close the projects done. (Nedler bridge and Rugby road underpass) • Ned asked about the status of a property owner problem- Riaan will find out the status and report. • Jeffrey asked about the new HR manager being hired helping with the city’s hiring process- Vic said they will meet in about 3 weeks. Chairman’s Matters • Application process for new board member discussion • Timeline for the master plan RFP? Vic- We have 150k to spend on a master plan. Will meet after Memorial Day. Ideally get the RFP out by the end of August. Get the interviewing process and start with a contractor and get it executed by the end of October. • Darden Towe: Vic- Their board did not approve synthetic fields and lighting. As of right now it is an unfunded project and will need to be resubmitted. Board Matters • None.
