Box 911, Nikuyah Walker Charlottesville, VA 22902 Judith Zeitler MINUTES Charlottesville Department of Social Services Advisory Board June 25, 2018 Board Members Present: Christine Gough, Rebekah Menning, Ivy Porpotage, Judith Zeitler, Cathee Johnson Phillips, Catherine Gallinosa Board Members Absent: Lisa Brown, Amanda Key, and Nikuyah Walker Guests: Jessica Staff Members Present: Diane Kuknyo, Laura Morris, Shawn Fry The meeting was called to order at 12:06 p.m. Introductions: The board welcomed guests, Jessica, student intern with the department and new administrative assistant Shawn. Public Comment: None Members’ Report: Ms. Phillips shared the Greater Charlottesville Area Trauma Informed Care Network has received a grant to cover training costs. 15 people are currently going through train the trainer training. Ms. Phillips also shared that Foothills Child Advocacy Center now has medical staff onsite to perform exams. The program is currently in the testing phase and will be formally announced in the fall. Approval of Meeting Minutes: The May minutes were approved as submitted Chair’s Report: Ms. Gough shared that she and Lisa Brown met with Ms. Kuknyo and Ms. Morris to discuss the upcoming annual report to City Council. The report will focus on:  Medicaid Expansion  The department’s work plan and how it ties into the City’s strategic plan with focus on becoming a trauma informed care agency and recruiting and retaining a quality workforce. Box 911, Nikuyah Walker Charlottesville, VA 22902 Judith Zeitler Director’s Report: Child Fatality Review: Ms. Kuknyo shared that she, other staff members, as well as staff from several community partner agencies recently attended the State Medical Examiner’s review in Roanoke regarding the child fatality in Charlottesville from 2016. The City of Charlottesville was commended on the work performed, the level of documentation, and the collaboration between the various partner agencies. Annual Report: Ms. Kuknyo shared some additional information that will be included in the upcoming annual report:  The department is receiving extra funds to potentially hire 2.50 additional staff due to Medicaid expansion.  Medicaid expansion won’t begin until January 2019 or later. The State has to submit a work plan to the Federal Government for approval first.  It is anticipated that the department will add 1,500 to 2,000 new Medicaid cases through expansion.  The department recently sent four staff members to Walla Walla, Washington to attend a trauma- informed care training. The department’s foster care prevention supervisor attended the training and will be helping with the report. Board members expressed interest in bringing the four staff members who attended the training to an upcoming board meeting.  Staff recruitment and retention is an ongoing issue. Albemarle and Henrico are the biggest competitors; but also UVA. A social worker is leaving for a job with UVA Human Resources. She is receiving a huge salary increase plus two bonuses. Ms. Phillips suggested that the board send a letter with the annual report to advocate for more staff funding.
