Box 911, Judith Zeitler Charlottesville, VA 22902 MINUTES Charlottesville Department of Social Services Advisory Board September 24, 2018 Board Members Present: Kathryn Gallanosa, Christine Gough, Rebekah Menning, Nikuyah Walker, Judith Zeitler Board Members Absent: Lisa Brown, Cathee Johnson Phillips, Ivy Porpotage Staff Members Present: Shawn Fry, Diane Kuknyo, and Laura Morris The meeting was called to order at 12:08 p.m. Introductions: None Public Comment: None Approval of Meeting Minutes: The August minutes were approved with one revision. In the director’s report section concerning the annual report, the word “being” needs to be changed to “bring”. Members’ Report: Ms. Gallanosa reminded everyone about the upcoming UVA Schwartz Center Rounds session: Revisiting Compassion in the Face of Chaos - How UVA Health System Responded to the Events of August 12th. The Schwartz Center Rounds are open to everyone -- faculty, staff, students, caregivers, and non-caregivers -- to offer a safe forum to discuss the difficult psychological, social, and emotional aspects of providing care. The open- forum format is case-based, exploring real UVA cases. Chair’s Report: Ms. Gough reminded members that the advisory board’s annual report to city council will be presented on Monday, October 15th. Director’s Report: Staff Recognition: Ms. Kuknyo shared that department staff were recently recognized by the Virginia Department of Social Services for the number of kinship care placements. Kinship care placements are foster care placements with relatives. The state target is 32%. The department is at 40%. Box 911, Judith Zeitler Charlottesville, VA 22902 be improved. Charlottesville was one of a select number of agencies state-wide asked to participate. The information will be used in a larger report to legislature. Emergency Operations for Hurricane Florence: Ms. Kuknyo shared that department staff were on standby to open shelters for Hurricane Florence. A physical emergency operations center was opened on Wednesday; but changed to a virtual center once the hurricane’s path changed. The virtual center stayed open through the weekend to monitor flooding. The department along with the Albemarle Department of Social Services and the University of Virginia spent a lot of time planning and preparing for the event. Annual Report Draft: Board members reviewed the report draft and provided feedback. Ms. Kuknyo will make revisions based on board member’s comments.
