The meeting was called to order at 12:08 p.m.

Introductions:
The board welcomed Tracie Brewster, Regional Administrative Manager and Penny Hall, Regional Director,
from the Virginia Department of Social Services Piedmont Regional Office.

Public Comment:
None

Approval of Meeting Minutes:
The February meeting minutes were approved with a correction to the meeting date.

Members’ Report:
Ms. Johnson Phillips shared that the Foothills Child Advocacy Center will be holding an open house and
reception on April 26th for community members to meet the board of directors and staff and to tour their newly
renovated and expanded facility. She also shared flyers about two upcoming events focused on community
resiliency, The Power of We: Community Resilience Building on March 28th and Childhood Adversity: Working
Together to Foster Resilience on April 17th.

Ms. Gallanosa shared that Compassionate Care Initiative will be presenting What Do I Do Now: Caring for a
Loved One at the Jefferson School City Center on March 27th. The event is a community resource open house
for family caregivers and health care professionals to learn more about available resources.

Chair’s Report:
Ms. Gough shared that she and Ms. Kuknyo recently attended a meeting in Lynchburg to see a demonstration
from the Virginia Department of Social Services on the new performance indicators scorecard tool that will be
released publicly for all localities.

Director’s Report:
FY2020 City Budget: Ms. Kuknyo shared that the final FY 2020 budget meeting is this week. The department
did not have to make any cuts to its budget. However, the department’s request to add three new positions was
not approved.

May and June Meeting Dates: Ms. Kuknyo shared that the board’s May meeting falls on Memorial Day and she
plans to be out of town for the June meeting date. She proposed combining the two meetings into one. Board
members agreed and set June 10th as the combined meeting date.

Monthly Data Report from VDSS: Ms. Kuknyo shared that the Virginia Department of Social Services will be
publishing quarterly performance indicator reports for all local departments of social services on the public
VDSS web site beginning in May. VDSS is still finalizing the measures for the report. The administrative
committee of the Virginia League of Social Services Executives has asked VDSS to include variables in the
report such as state system outages that affect an agency’s ability to meet processing targets. VDSS is looking
into it.

Virginia Department of Planning and Budgeting: Ms. Kuknyo shared that a representative from the Virginia
Department of Planning and Budgeting is coming to the department next Monday at the request of the Governor
to learn about the department’s programs, caseloads, and budget processes.

Board Member Training:
Tracie Brewster and Penny Hall from the Virginia Department of Social Services Piedmont Regional Office
provided board member training. This included an overview of the recently revised board member handbook.
This training is now an annual requirement for all social services advisory and administrative board members.


The next board meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 22, 2019 in the City Hall Basement Conference
Room.
