Box 911, Judith Zeitler Charlottesville, VA 22902 MINUTES Charlottesville Department of Social Services Advisory Board January 27, 2020 Board Members Present: Lisa Brown, Kathryn Gallanosa, Christine Gough, Sena Magill, Rebekah Menning, Janet Morrow, LD Perry, Judith Zeitler Board Members Absent: None Staff Members Present: Tonia Alexander, Alyssa Cattell-Gordon, Diane Kuknyo, Laura Morris, Scottie Rudin, Autumn Scott The meeting was called to order at 12:07 p.m. Introductions: The board welcomed new city council representative, Sena Magill, and staff members, Tonia Alexander, Alyssa Cattell-Gordon, and Scottie Rudin. Public Comment: None Approval of Meeting Minutes: The November meeting minutes were approved as submitted. Members’ Report: Ms. Morrow gave positive feedback on the article published by the C-Ville Weekly about the department and the board’s annual report presentation to City council. Ms. Gallanosa gave an update about her Doctoral project on trauma-informed care for primary care health providers. She shared that as part of her data collection, she surveyed employees at UVA Student Health to gauge their knowledge on the subject. Tests and quizzes were administered before and after her training presentation. She is currently analyzing the data and will update the board on her findings. Ms. Brown shared information about the Maternal Mental Health Coalition in Charlottesville, which supports universal education, screenings, referrals, and treatment for women with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. The Coalition aims to expand treatment options and educate healthcare providers about these disorders to provide more resources to affected women. Mr. Perry reminded board members about the Jefferson Area Board for Aging (JABA) and that they may be able to provide services to individuals who do not qualify for PACE, Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly. JABA provides information, resources, and support for older adults, individuals with disabilities, and family caregivers throughout central Virginia. Box 911, Judith Zeitler Charlottesville, VA 22902 Ms. Magill shared that The Center is opening a new facility located in the Belvedere neighborhood. There will be a grand opening celebration on April 18th. The Center will be more accessible by offering scholarships, extended hours, and a CAT bus stop at the front entrance. Chair’s Report: Ms. Gough reminded members that there is a vacancy on the board and asked everyone to encourage those who may be interested to apply. The application is available on the City website and the deadline to apply is March 6th. VIEW Childcare Team: Staff members Tonia Alexander, Alyssa Cattell-Gordon, and Scottie Rudin provided an overview of the resources that the Child Care Team provides. The team shared that they recently partnered with Albemarle Department of Social Services, Ready Kids, and the United Way to organize a Child Care Expo. The expo offered training, networking opportunities, and resources to child care subsidy providers. The Child Care Team also partnered with the Albemarle Department of Social Services to create a quarterly newsletter called “Building Blocks,” which provides information to providers about policy updates, training opportunities, and community events. Director’s Report: Re-classify Foster Care Position: Ms. Kuknyo shared that the Chief of Family Services attended a conference that introduced the concept of a position that would serve as an engagement and education specialist for parents who are involved in the foster care system. The department is interested in doing the same and is working with Human Resources to re-classify a vacant position Agenda Items for Future Meetings: Ms. Kuknyo asked members what agenda items they would like to cover at future meetings. The board decided that they would like to focus on Cultural Humility, homelessness, and bridge- building with the community. They also expressed interest in meeting with the Adult Protective Services Team and new hires. Ms. Kuknyo will invite the Thomas Jefferson Area Coalition for the Homeless (TJACH) to speak about homelessness in the Charlottesville area at an upcoming meeting.
