Tree Commission Meeting Minutes: October 4, 2022 Attendees: Peggy Van Yahres, Paul Josey, Donna Shaunesey, Holly Lafferty, Jeff Pacelli, Jeff Aten, Mark Zollinhofer, Riaan Anthony, Tim Padalino, Vicki Metcalf, Roxanne White, Makshya Tolbert, Karim Habbab Peggy: Comments regarding September Minutes (approved) Steve: Brief summary of staff projects -Parks and Recreation still understaffed -Inventory of Spring 2022 plantings has been completed, installations less than 5% mortality -Parks staff recently submitted Mall RFP -Parks staff recently submitted new budget requests for additional funding: Invasive plant control/containment, funding for mall trees, and additional funding for hazard tree removals. - Continued budget for Ash tree removals and tree plantings/installations -Nominated trees have been submitted for City Council review -Riaan will be submitting request to start having in-person committee meetings Discussion of Mall Tree Removals: Parks staff prepared to hold public meetings concerning the mall tree removals – meetings will take place on Zoom (Oct 27 at 5:30), and in-person (Nov 1,3 at 5:30) Discussion on what to do with wood material from tree removals (benches for city parks and the mall, picture frames, turned bowls). Additional conversation about auctioning off finished products with monies returned to the mall for future projects) Committee Reports: Education & Advocacy • Re-Leaf updates: Volunteers were utilized approaching homeowners to talk about tree planting programs around the 10th and Page neighborhood regions. Volunteers include members of ReLeaf, TC, CATS, and the “Green Team” (teenage volunteers interested in joining the effort). Interested homeowners can select species from a list (7 different species). -Installations will occur in November 2022 • Partnership between Re-Leaf and C3 educating landowners on how to make their homes more energy efficient • Tree Commission is hoping to create an updated pamphlet or tri-fold detailing what the TC is and what programs they support and are involved in. To be discussed in Sub-Committee Arbor Committee • Master Tree List – Urban Forester presented updates to the Master Tree List. Changes were discussed and noted, updates to the list will be discussed at the next meeting Codes Committee • Codes Committee, CVille Plans Together, and Parks and Recreation staff continue work on City Ordinances. Sub Committee will meet before next TC meeting • Azalea Springs project has not made the list for Planning Commission for October • High Street Project (245 housing units) is a development project that will continue to be on the TC’s radar. Any updates will be discussed as they are presented to public and staff • Rewrites for code/ordinances draft by winter Peggy – Motion to adjourn meeting
